Best Way to Transfer Money from the US to the UK

TL;DR – Key Takeaways

The US-to-UK transfer corridor is among the most developed and competitive international money transfer routes in the world. For most personal transfers, Wise consistently offers the best exchange rates (mid-market rate with transparent fees), while Revolut and OFX are strong alternatives for regular senders and larger amounts respectively. Bank wire transfers via SWIFT are reliable but expensive due to wide exchange rate margins. The USD/GBP pair is highly liquid, meaning rate margins should be very tight anything above 1% above mid-market is overpaying. For transfers above $10,000, a specialist FX broker or OFX typically provides the best total value.

The US-UK Money Transfer Corridor: Overview

The United States and United Kingdom share one of the most active bilateral financial relationships in the world, underpinned by the English language, deep cultural and family ties, and the world's two largest financial centers in New York and London. This translates to a high-volume, highly competitive remittance corridor with excellent provider choice for consumers and businesses.

The US-UK corridor is characterized by the transfer of a major, highly liquid currency pair — USD to GBP — meaning exchange rates are tight and transfer infrastructure is mature. Common reasons for transfers include family support, pension and retirement income transfers, property purchases, tuition fees for UK universities, and business invoice payments. Post-Brexit regulatory changes have not significantly affected the mechanics or cost of international transfers between the two countries.

Most Important Factors When Transferring USD to GBP

Exchange rate quality is the most critical variable for USD-to-GBP transfers, precisely because GBP is a major currency with a very tight interbank spread. A provider offering even 0.5% worse than the mid-market rate is charging more than necessary for this particular currency pair. Fees matter more for small transfers; exchange rate margin matters more for large transfers. Transfer speed is typically not a problem in this corridor, with most digital providers delivering funds in one to two business days.

Regulatory trust is also a meaningful consideration. Senders should verify that their chosen provider is licensed by FinCEN as an MSB in the US and is authorized by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the UK. Both Wise and Revolut, for example, hold FCA authorization and are regulated in the US, offering a high level of consumer protection in both jurisdictions.

Best Methods to Send Money from the US to the UK

1. Wise (Best for Exchange Rate Transparency)

Wise transfers USD to GBP at the real mid-market rate identical to the rate shown on Google Finance or Reuters and charges a transparent, low percentage-based fee, typically 0.4% to 0.7% of the transfer amount. There are no hidden margins in the exchange rate. Transfers are typically completed in one to two business days for bank-to-bank transfers. Wise also offers a multi-currency account, allowing recipients in the UK to receive transfers into a Wise GBP account with UK sort code and account number, functioning like a local UK bank account for incoming payments.

2. Revolut (Best for Regular Senders with Account)

Revolut offers mid-market exchange rates on weekday transfers within plan limits, making it competitive for regular US-to-UK senders. Premium and Metal plan holders receive higher currency exchange limits before a small fee applies. The platform is particularly convenient for users who already hold a Revolut account, as it integrates currency exchange with spending, savings, and transfer functionality. Weekend transfers incur a 1% markup for GBP, which is worth factoring in for time-sensitive transfers.

3. OFX (Best for Large Transfers)

OFX specializes in larger international transfers (minimum typically $1,000) and consistently offers exchange rate margins in the 0.4% to 0.8% range for major currency pairs including USD/GBP. OFX offers 24/7 customer support, a dedicated online dealing desk for larger transactions, and no per-transfer fee for transfers above a minimum threshold. Their forward contract and limit order products are among the most accessible in the industry, making OFX a strong choice for property buyers, pension recipients, or businesses managing ongoing USD/GBP exposure.

4. Bank Wire Transfers

US bank SWIFT wires to UK banks are universally available, highly reliable, and typically arrive within two to three business days. The principal cost disadvantage is the exchange rate: US banks typically apply a 2.5% to 4% margin on USD/GBP conversions, compared to 0.4% to 0.8% on specialist platforms. For a $20,000 transfer, this difference can translate to GBP 400 to GBP 700 less received. Bank wires also incur outgoing wire fees (typically $25 to $50) and potentially UK receiving bank fees (typically GBP 5 to GBP 15). They remain the preferred method for regulated transactions requiring bank-to-bank documentation.

5. PayPal and Xoom

PayPal and its international transfer subsidiary Xoom are widely used for smaller US-to-UK personal transfers. PayPal's exchange rates carry a roughly 3% to 4% margin above mid-market, making it significantly more expensive than specialist providers for substantial amounts. For small transfers of $100 to $500 where convenience and speed are prioritized over cost optimization, PayPal is a practical option given its ubiquity and the near-instant availability of funds in the recipient's PayPal account.

Understanding USD/GBP Exchange Rates

The US dollar to British pound sterling exchange rate is one of the most traded currency pairs in the global FX market, with average daily trading volumes in the hundreds of billions of dollars. Major drivers of the USD/GBP rate include: US Federal Reserve interest rate policy and forward guidance, Bank of England monetary policy decisions, US and UK economic data releases (GDP, inflation, employment), and geopolitical developments affecting risk sentiment.

The GBP has historically been a relatively strong currency, typically trading in a range of 1.20 to 1.40 against the USD, though it has experienced significant volatility most notably during the 2016 Brexit referendum, the 2022 mini-budget crisis, and periods of global financial stress. Senders making large one-time transfers are advised to monitor the rate over a 30- to 90-day window and consider using a limit order to target a favorable rate.

Comparing Transfer Fees and Total Cost

For a representative $5,000 US-to-UK transfer, the cost differential between providers is significant. A major US bank wire typically delivers approximately GBP 3,700 to GBP 3,750 (based on a 3% exchange rate margin plus $35 fee). Wise delivers approximately GBP 3,880 to GBP 3,900 (0.5% fee, mid-market rate). OFX delivers approximately GBP 3,870 to GBP 3,890 (0.6% margin, no fee). The difference between the bank and specialist providers on a $5,000 transfer is approximately GBP 130 to GBP 190 equivalent to $160 to $240. On a $50,000 transfer, this differential scales proportionally to $1,600 to $2,400.

Regulatory Framework: US and UK Compliance

International money transfers from the US are regulated under the Bank Secrecy Act and administered by FinCEN. Providers must be licensed as Money Services Businesses and maintain robust AML and KYC programs. The US imposes no outbound transfer taxes, though gift tax reporting obligations apply for gifts above $18,000 per recipient per year.

In the UK, incoming international transfers are accepted without restriction for personal purposes. The UK's HMRC does not impose tax on incoming personal remittances or gifts, though income-producing assets transferred to the UK may have tax implications depending on the recipient's residency and domicile status. UK-resident recipients of large transfers should consult a UK tax advisor regarding any potential inheritance tax or income tax implications specific to their circumstances.

Best Practices for Regular Transfers to the UK

Individuals who send money regularly to the UK — such as expats supporting family, retirees receiving pension payments, or property owners covering mortgage costs benefit significantly from a structured approach. Setting up a recurring transfer schedule with a specialist provider locks in preferred rates or automates transfers when rate thresholds are met. Opening a multi-currency account with Wise provides a UK bank account (with sort code and account number) that can receive GBP without international transfer fees, functioning as a local account for UK payments.

For pension or investment income remitted from the US to a UK bank account, maintaining clear records of fund origins is important for both US and UK tax compliance. A qualified cross-border financial advisor familiar with both US and UK tax law can identify opportunities to structure transfers tax-efficiently, particularly for US citizens resident in the UK who are subject to tax obligations in both jurisdictions.

Business Transfers from the US to the UK

US businesses paying UK suppliers, employees, or contractors have additional considerations beyond individual remittances. Dedicated business accounts with specialist FX providers offer commercial exchange rates, batch payment capabilities, API integration for automated payroll or invoicing, and detailed transaction reporting for accounting purposes. Providers including OFX, Currencies Direct, and Moneycorp have established business transfer products for this purpose.

Managing USD/GBP currency risk is a legitimate business finance consideration for any company with material UK revenue or expense exposure. Forward contracts allow businesses to lock in a USD/GBP exchange rate for future payments, protecting profit margins from adverse rate movements. This is standard practice for importers, exporters, and businesses with significant cross-border payroll obligations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest way to transfer money from the US to the UK?

For most transfer sizes, Wise is consistently the cheapest option, offering the mid-market exchange rate with a transparent fee of approximately 0.4% to 0.7%. For larger transfers above $10,000, OFX or a specialist FX broker typically offers the best total value due to tighter exchange rate margins and no per-transaction fees. The cheapest option depends on the exact transfer amount, urgency, and how the transfer is funded. Always compare on total GBP delivered to the recipient, not on headline fees or exchange rates in isolation.

How long does a US-to-UK bank transfer take?

Transfer times vary by method. Wise bank-to-bank transfers for USD/GBP typically complete in one to two business days. SWIFT wire transfers between banks take two to three business days. Debit-card-funded transfers on Revolut or Wise can complete in minutes to hours. Weekends and UK public holidays can add one to two days to any transfer timeline. The UK's Faster Payments system applies only to domestic GBP transfers, not incoming international wires, so there is no regulatory same-day guarantee on incoming SWIFT transfers.

Is there a limit on how much money I can send from the US to the UK?

There is no US government-imposed limit on outbound international transfers. Provider limits vary: fully verified accounts on Wise can typically transfer up to $1 million or more per transaction; OFX has no stated upper limit for verified accounts. The UK imposes no cap on incoming international transfers for personal purposes, though UK banks may require documentation of source of funds for large inbound transfers, particularly above GBP 10,000. UK-resident recipients should be aware of potential stamp duty or capital gains tax implications if transfers are related to property purchases or asset disposals.

Do I pay tax on money transferred from the US to the UK?

The US does not impose a transfer tax on outbound international remittances. If the transfer constitutes a gift exceeding $18,000 per recipient in a calendar year, the US sender may need to file IRS Form 709, though actual gift tax liability is rare. UK recipients are not taxed on incoming personal transfers or gifts. However, US citizens living in the UK should be aware that the US taxes its citizens on worldwide income regardless of residence, and income or capital gains realized in the US may be taxable in both jurisdictions depending on the applicable tax treaty provisions.

Which UK bank account details do I need to receive an international transfer?

To receive an international SWIFT wire transfer into a UK bank account, the sender typically needs the recipient's full name, UK bank account number, sort code (six-digit code identifying the UK bank branch), bank name and address, and the bank's IBAN (International Bank Account Number). For transfers from non-SEPA countries such as the US, the bank's SWIFT/BIC code is also required. A Wise multi-currency account provides all these details and can receive international transfers without charging the recipient an inbound transfer fee — an advantage over some UK high-street banks that charge GBP 5 to GBP 15 per incoming international wire.
